PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE: The Garden Club kicked off the New Year with a fabulous program, one of the very best. Club members were treated to a fascinating demonstration of The Art of Bonsai, presented by a team of three prominent members of the Bonsai Society of San Francisco: Andrea Burhoe, Gary Tom and Dr. Brian Schindler, whose passion and knowledge of Bonsai captivated a large and appreciative audience. Tea was spectacular with a large variety of treats accompanying surprised whimsical succulents in little Japanese vintage tea cups! It was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all. Thanks to Dr. Diane Wara who reminded us to protect ourselves from this year's dangerous influenza pandemic by getting flu shots and keeping Tamiflu on hand, to Ingeborg McGlynn for the amusing horticulture talk and the delicious sweets, to the House and Flower committees Anna Bolechowski and Nancy Hagosian for the three gorgeous arrangements, linen and silver tea service, to Clorinda Aldrich and Donna Earhart for greeting guests at the door, and to Yen Bachmeier for the delectable savory tea sandwiches. Last but not least, many thanks go to the dear Old Goat Mel Bachmeier for helping with all the heavy lifting of setting up and cleaning up for the event. We really appreciate having him around! The February program will take you back to the eighteenth century with one of its most colorful characters, Giacomo Casanova, a witty charmer, world traveler, spy, gambler, and most of all a scandalous seducer.
