PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

What a busy month April has been! First, we had horticulturist Shelagh Fritz of the Garden Conservancy come to take us on a virtual tour of the Gardens of Alcatraz through her wondeful slideshow! The presentation was extremely informative and so interesting that many members have expressed interests in going to Alcatraz to see the gorgeous gardens in its reality! Thanks to Eva Monroe and Kathleen Anderson for making this possible.

Our next event was the amazing Spring Fling “Swap & Share” community service. This big project was conceived and expertly choreographed by the amazing Amy Quirk. Thirty donors filled seven clothes racks with items ranging from casual wear to designer pieces, including Armani, BCBG, Bogner, Burberry, Coach, DKNY, Anne Fontaine, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Missoni, MaxMara, Ellie Tahari, TSE cashmere and Adrienne Vittadini. In addition, there were purses, costume jewelry, hair ornaments and hats decoratively arranged on at least three tables.

The Clubhouse was magically transformed into “La Chic Boutique” on a beautiful, warm and sunny Saturday afternoon. We had fun browsing and trying on different outfits. Some of us walked away with treasures. After the “swapping” was done, there were over two hundred items remaining for “sharing” with charity. Next day, we loaded up five cars and delivered the goods to The Bayview Mission of Grace Cathedral on Jerrold Street, run by the ever cheerful Rev. Nina Pickerrell. Whew! That was lots of work, but a job well done.

Credits go to Good Byes Consignment for lending us four of the clothes racks; co-chair, and a hidden force behind the scene, Nancy Hagosian for her helpful advice to Amy; merchanding specialist Eva Monroe and her team members Louise Bacigalupi, Trish Hurt, Nancy Hagosian & Diane Wara; the fearless drivers Mary Hanson, Kathleen Anderson, Yen Bachmeier, Amy Quirk & Eve Wertsch; and donor intake managers Yen Bachmeier, Katie Balestreri, Kathe Farrell & Amy Quirk. Floral decorations for both events were arranged by Nancy Hagosian.

During the general meeting, acting Parliamentarian Clorinda Alrich presided over the election of the Club’s officers and directors for the September 2012 – June 2013 term. The general membership voted on the slate of officers as recommended by the nominating committee. The new officers will be installed at our traditional Strawberry Dessert Day on May 21st.

As our fiscal year drawing to a close, I would like to express my gratitude to YOU. It has been a priviledge to serve as president of the Garden Club in this past year AND it has been a great pleasure to work along side a team of extremely talented and hardworking ladies on the executive board and the committee chairs. Thank you!
