PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Twenty five Garden Club ladies bundled up and braved the 30mph gusty wind to go on a wonderful walking tour of the Laguna Honda Hospital Gardens.
Our tour guides were LHH Head Gardener John Alexander, and their Director of Communications Department, Linda Acosta . We learned of the history and the amazing transformation of this new facility, admired the art work on the walls. We were delighted to be visiting a petting zoo, examining vertical gardens, frolicking through an orchard. John even let us picking giant swiss chard and gorgeous onion flowers from a vegetable garden in the middle of an open field. Some of us came home happily with hands full of fragrant lilacs. To top it all off, on our way back to Forest Hill, we were invited to visit Ingeborg McGlynn's beautiful rose garden. What a treat!
I'd like to thank Eva Monroe and Kathleen Anderson for organizing this event. We all admired Eva's ability to herd a large bunch of wandering cats! We thank our gracious hostess Sally Kipper (and many helping hands) for the bountiful and beautiful afternoon tea at her lovely home. We all got a surprise bonus: feasting our eyes at Sally's intimate yet enchanting garden. It was a fine day for a group outing, blustery or not!
Our Spring Community Service was fun and productive. We filled sixty bags of toiletries which will be delivered to battered women shelters for Mothers' Day.
Many thanks to Clorinda Aldrich for hosting the event at her home, to Dottie McHugh for sewing the bags, and to Louise Bacigalupi, Carol DeLucchi, Maxine Dickson, Kathe Farrell, Ingeborg McGlynn, and Eve Wertsch, for helping with the assembling, and to all members who donated the materials.
At the general meeting, Parliamentarian Sima Talai presided over the election of the Club’s officers and directors for the September 2013 – June 2014 term. The general membership voted on the slate of officers as recommended by the nominating committee. The new officers will be installed at our general meeting and year end party on May 31st.
As the world turns and as the FHGC term year drawing to a close, my heart is stirred that this is my farewell message as president. It has been a journey full of challenges, triumphs and joy. My gratitude to all of YOU for you have taught me when to lead and when to follow. It has been a privilege to serve as president of the Garden Club in the past two years and it has been a great pleasure to work alongside a team of extremely talented and hardworking ladies who have served as members of the executive board and the committee chairs. Thank You!
